Alfred Fairbank was a British calligrapher most noted for his textbook A Handwriting Manual. His only typeface design was an upright narrow italic issued in 1929 by Monotype as “Bembo Condensed Italic”. This was marketed as an alternate companion for Bembo, even though Bembo has its own italic, so this is considered an alternate italic that has not received as much use. Fairbank did not design this face with the intention of being a companion to Bembo but rather it was intended as a stand-alone design.

The face is beautiful for setting text as well as being very suitable for marginalia in fine press books or elegant caption work.

This special issue from the Bixler Letterfoundry in partnership with Dry Inc. is a limited 16pt. casting of Fairbank Italic, which was the largest size of this face made available by Monotype. Each font is made up as an approximate 12A scheme with upper and lower case, figures, punctuation, and ligatures. As with all Bixler Monotype casting, the mix of foundry metal ensures a harder alloy for longer-lasting type. Each 4.5 lb. font is boxed for easy shipping.
