This letterpress print by Richard Kegler uses a very limited palette with a wide range of subtlety. The wood blocks used were an assortment of partial capital Rs ranging in size from nine to twelve inches in height. These printing blocks are from the Pollack Collection—the showcard printer collection that makes up the bulk of the material in the P22 printshop. These blocks were likely cut to print partial letters on the edges of billboard sized posters that had to be titled together after printing. In total, there are nine layers of blue printed on top of each other to render more than fifty shades, but it seemed like a good name for the print. Kegler says “This print is named for a song by Edwyn Collins that kept popping into my head while printing it, not so much for the more obvious reference, but it is open to interpretation.”
