For this print Richard Kegler uses a collection of vintage wood type Ampersands to create a layered stacking of 8 ampersands in 8 colors: white, black, gold, silver, grey, white, black, gold. Each layer has textural or visual interaction with the preceding layer that define the outlines of each glyph. The largest ampersand is 12" tall from the Pollock Collection of advertising wood blocks, and the smallest is 16 point from the metal version of Jim Rimmer's Stern font.

The ampersand is the one typographic character that has its own unique place—as a word that is also a glyph—and really has no other use other than signifying ‘and’. It is the character that has a special place as a graphic element that makes a bold statement in its simple beauty.

These twin editions feature the same letterpress printing on vastly different backgrounds for a striking effect that draws the eye into the center and a meditative appreciation of the Ampersand.
